Last week saw an overlap of two professional interests, as I photographed a conference talk about an industry-specific generative AI solution. (I’ve been working on a generative AI writing project training Large Language Models since April 2023). AI is rarely out of the headlines today and certainly pops up all over my LinkedIn. However, it’s probably not so common to hear about a specific generative AI solution that could impact all of us. Or at least those of us who continue to use the NHS.
Innex.ai claims to empower healthcare infrastructure professionals with AI, beginning with the NHS built environment. It simplifies the searching, finding, and application of up-to-date governance documents, legislation, regulations and best practices. It promises to save staff up to four hours per week in searching for data. This is an inventive practical application of generative AI that removes the hard grind, or offers a head-start with substantial projects. At the moment I feel this is what it’s best at, providing a rough structure or outline. A skeleton from which to build.
Supported by organisations including the University of Cambridge, Microsoft Founders Hub, NHS England and Wales, and Gov.uk, Innex appears to have solid foundations. It aims to practically apply the rapidly evolving technology of generative AI in a public health space that badly needs modernisation, and any cost savings it can possibly get. I think it’s a broadly positive application that deserves to be cheered on.
As a conference photographer, your role is sort of bot-like, as I also sometimes feel in my AI role, reviewing training text for large language models. And as I sometimes feel as a father, school run driver, dishwasher, dog-walker. Life can be repetitive. (Sorry, too much digression). As an event snapper, your role is to repeatedly take photographs and only really speak when spoken to. I daringly broke the wall after this talk and hunted out the exhibition stand of Innex for a brief play around with their impressive platform.
Good luck to its founders, Jan, and Carl-Magnus. Here are a few pictures of Carl-Magnus at the conference. His talk clearly stimulated many in the crowd. Although I did overhear one attendee leaving the theatre afterwards saying, without any hint of irony, “back in my day it was Ask Jeeves. Now it’s this. I mean seriously, what’s the difference?”
Naturally I remained silent at the time, but I would suggest the difference is significant.
