Cardiff Mardi Gras Parade

2nd September 2013
Cardiff Mardi Gras Parade brought an explosion of colour and vibrancy to the streets of Cardiff last weekend.

As it took place on my doorstep, it was impossible to resist the short walk into town and mixing with a diverse seam of humanity.  It’s a celebration of self-expression and a platform for all kinds of messages: personal, social and political.

The atmosphere was warm, fun, friendly and celebratory.

You could as easily exchange a passing smile with an eight foot, cross-dressing videographer, as you could with a deceptively well preserved dancer (who looked SO much younger from behind).

Notions of normality ceased to exist.

I always love street parades for the quite selfish reason that you have an open invitation to photograph people.  If people are in a parade walking through the middle of a city centre, they want to be noticed and photographed.  There is zero awkwardness or ambiguity as a result.

Anyway, this is a small flavour of it.  Hope you like.
