As a regular Cardiff conference photographer, I find this a richly varied city for event venues. The capital city of Wales, Cardiff has a number of iconic, uniquely structured buildings which host events and conferences all year round.
A number of these permit light in unusual ways. These include the National Assembly For Wales glass-fronted Senedd building and its near neighbour in Cardiff Bay, the Wales Millennium Centre, with giant letters carved out of its domed exterior.
It helps to give photographers more scope and creative licence in capturing images which are a little different to the standard. Cardiff City Hall’s main room is a strikingly beautiful room.
But of course there are plenty of other buildings across Cardiff and the region where events are hosted which are more functional. And naturally you have to work with what you’re given, however tight the space or uninspiring the room. It’s often a good idea to keep a wide angle lens or two in the kit bag. This helps to flatter the size of a smaller room if needed.

Event organisers might wish to consider photography when designing the room for a conference or event. While organising any event comes with an array of decisions and choices, if bandwidth allows they could ask a number of questions.
Will the conference speakers be adequately well-lit in a dark room behind that lectern?
Or will they be plunged into darkness, making use of flash unavoidable?
Will that one spotlight be enough, or will shadows be thrown off everywhere, creating an undesirably gothic effect?
Are there enough angles and enough space to create a good variety of shots?

If it’s an award ceremony, does the photographer have a clear path through or around tables to the stage?
Is there a strong backdrop against which photographs can be taken?
Is a Powerpoint presentation display being projected directly onto the stage and potentially the people being photographed?
These are all potential stumbling blocks which can be eliminated if planned for in advance. This is another reason it helps to have clear communication channels and open discussion with a photographer before the event is in full swing.
